4 Days  Chogoria - Sirimon Route Trekking The Chogoria route is less crowded since it takes longer, but that the scenes on this route more than make up for it. there is a little bit of everything ;loud and splashing Nithi falls, clean and sparkly rivers and springs, the Mugi hills perfect for bird watching and the magnificent lake Michaelson with the Temple above it. The Sirimon route used for descending has          the perfect view of the giant groundsels and lobelia. NOTE: though this hike can be completed in 4 days, we highly recommend adding another day. The second day is very demanding and tedious as we climb up to Minto’s camp. There is an option of spending an extra day at Minto’s relaxing and enjoying the view or better still spending the night at Nithi Camp that is halfway to Minto’s. A short walk to Nithi Falls or climb Mugi hill for better acclimatisation is advised. Day 1: Nairobi – Mt Kenya Bandas (2,900m) 10km 950m ascent. A drive from Nairobi to Chogoria town for lunch after which we take a 4*4 vehicle to drive up where we start our hike via the bamboo forest. The vehicle helps in cutting most of the lower ground. We walk for 3 hours to the Mt Kenya Bandas for dinner and an overnight. Day 2: Mt Kenya Bandas – Minto’s campsite (4,200m) 8-9 hrs. 17km, 1,400 ascent. The day starts early after breakfast in order to make it to the Minto’s camp before its dark yet not sacrificing the magical sceneries on this route. , the Giant billiards table, Mugi hills, the Gorges Valley and the view of the picks ahead and the vast plains below. A picnic lunch and occasional stop overs to drink and refill the water bottles. Dinner and an overnight stay at the Minto’s campsite. Day 3: Minto’s – Pt. Lenana (4,985m) – Old Moses Camp          (3,300m) 11-12 hrs. 785m ascent, 24km, 1,685m descent This is a busy day that starts at three am in order to enjoy sunrise at the peak of point Lenana .after that rewarding experience, we descend to the Shimpton’s camp for breakfast and continue further to old Moses where we spend the night. Descending via Sirimon route is gradual and exciting as you enjoy the Flora and Fauna through the Mackinder’s valley. We spend 11-12 hours walking Day 4: Old Moses Camp – Nairobi. 2-3 hrs. walk. After the much needed rest and breakfast in the morning, descend to the Sirimon Park gate for about 2-3 hours to catch a vehicle for a drive back to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.

The Chogoria Route is less crowded and widely regarded as the most scenic route on Mount Kenya.
Though it takes longer, the landscapes more than make up for it.

Highlights include the loud and spectacular Nithi Falls, crystal-clear rivers and springs,
the Mugi Hills perfect for bird watching, and the magnificent Lake Michaelson beneath the Temple.

The descent via Sirimon Route offers stunning views of giant groundsels and lobelia across the alpine landscape.

Note: Although this trek can be completed in 4 days, we highly recommend adding an extra day.
Day 2 is long and demanding. You may choose to spend an extra night at Minto’s Camp or at Nithi Camp (midway).
Short acclimatization hikes to Nithi Falls or Mugi Hill are highly recommended.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Mt Kenya Bandas (2,900m)

10km | 950m ascent

Drive from Nairobi to Chogoria town for lunch, then continue in a 4×4 vehicle through the bamboo forest,
cutting off much of the lower trekking distance.

Begin your hike and walk for about 3 hours to reach Mt Kenya Bandas for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Mt Kenya Bandas – Minto’s Camp (4,200m)

8–9 hrs | 17km | 1,400m ascent

Start early after breakfast to ensure arrival at Minto’s Camp before dark while enjoying the incredible scenery.

Highlights include the Giant Billiards Table, Mugi Hills, Gorges Valley, views of the peaks ahead,
and vast plains below.

Picnic lunch is taken along the way with regular stops for hydration. Dinner and overnight at Minto’s Camp.

Day 3: Minto’s – Point Lenana (4,985m) – Old Moses Camp (3,300m)

11–12 hrs | 24km | 785m ascent | 1,685m descent

An early start at 3:00 AM to reach Point Lenana in time for sunrise.
The experience is breathtaking as the morning light illuminates the peaks and plains.

After the summit, descend to Shipton Camp for breakfast and continue further down via Sirimon Route.
Enjoy the flora and fauna through Mackinder’s Valley before arriving at Old Moses Camp for overnight.

Day 4: Old Moses Camp – Nairobi

2–3 hrs walk

After breakfast, descend to Sirimon Park Gate (2–3 hours) where transport will be waiting.
Drive back to Nairobi arriving in the late afternoon.

Best Time to Trek

  • January to March – Clear skies and great views
  • June to October – Stable and dry trekking conditions
