Tsavo National Park Safari – Discover Tsavo East & Tsavo West Kenya.
Tsavo National Park is one of the largest wildlife conservation areas in the world, divided into Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park. Together, they cover over 22,000 square kilometres, offering vast landscapes, fewer crowds, and an authentic African safari experience.
Tsavo West National Park – Dramatic Scenery & Hidden Wildlife.
Tsavo West National Park spans approximately9,065 square kilometres and is known for its diverse landscapes, includingvolcanic cones, rocky outcrops, swamps, natural springs, and rolling hills.
This park carries a rich history, including the legendary man-eating lions of Tsavo. Although wildlife can be harder to spot due to thicker vegetation, visitors are rewarded with sightings of elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, giraffes, and numerous bird species in a quieter, more untouched environment.
Its scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere make Tsavo West one of Kenya’s most rewarding safari destinations.
Tsavo East National Park – Open Plains & Red Elephants
Tsavo East National Park, established in 1948, covers about 13,747 square kilometres and is one of Kenya’s oldest and largest parks. Located near Voi in Taita-Taveta County, it lies in a semi-arid region once known as the Taru Desert.
The park is famous for its vast open savannah plains, making wildlife easier to spot. It is particularly known for its red elephants, coloured by the park’s distinctive red soil.
Major features include the Galana River, formed by the confluence of the Athi and Tsavo Rivers, as well as natural attractions like Lugard Falls and the Yatta Plateau, one of the longest lava flows in the world.
Wildlife in Tsavo National Park
Tsavo is home to the famous African Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino — along with a wide range of other wildlife including cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, antelopes, and hyenas.
The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with species such as crowned cranes, black kites, lovebirds, and the sacred ibis commonly spotted.
Best Time to Visit Tsavo
The best time to visit Tsavo National Park is during the dry seasons from June to October and January to February, when wildlife gathers around water sources and is easier to spot.
The wet season offers lush scenery and excellent bird watching opportunities, though some roads may become difficult to navigate.
